Lead by Expressing Truth

by Pia Jansson | Nov 6, 2025 | Leadership

I’ve been surrounded by great leaders and not-so-great ones throughout my career.

The difference?

The great ones admitted they didn’t have all the answers and engaged their teams.

What great leaders do differently

I still remember being invited into one-to-one brainstorms where leaders genuinely wanted my input.

It helped them make better decisions.

And it energized me to contribute more.

Inspiring leadership begins the moment you stop proving your worth and start expressing your truth.

What shifts in practice

Leaders stop performing competence and start sharing perspective.

Instead of “here’s what we’re doing,” it becomes “here’s what I’m thinking and why.”

They stop hiding uncertainty and start naming it openly.

Teams relax when leaders say “I’m not sure yet” because now they can help figure it out together.

When leaders share their vision openly, they invite teams to shape it.

That’s when people don’t just follow the plan, they own it.

What happens next

People pitch ideas more freely because vulnerability from the top makes honesty safe everywhere else.

Decisions get better because teams contribute real input, not just agreement.

What holds leaders back

But here’s what stops most leaders.

They think expressing truth means looking weak.

It’s the opposite.

Proving your worth signals insecurity.

Expressing your truth signals confidence.

Reflection

What’s one moment when a leader’s honesty made you trust them more?

If you’re feeling off your game or your leadership edge isn’t where you want it to be, the next step is at the top of the page.
