Listening Is a Superpower

Listening with an open mind can be the difference between engagement and disengagement.

Yet so many leaders do not truly listen. Often, it is the pressure to respond quickly or the focus on getting results that gets in the way.

But when people feel genuinely heard and valued, trust grows and collaboration improves.

It is a trust builder

Hearing people out and truly listening to what they have to say objectively builds trust and shows your team they are valued.

When people feel heard, they are more likely to engage, contribute, and share what is really going on.

Active listening opens space

Active listening opens up the space for insights and new ideas.

Focus on the person talking.

Use eye contact.

Listen with an open mind.

Ask open ended questions.

Reflect before you respond

Restate what they said in your own words.

Try something like, “So what I hear you saying...”

And before giving feedback, ask if they want any feedback from you first.

Pause before you act

Reflect on whether there are actions you need to take to address what has been shared.

When you allow people to vent or share without judgment, you can help them get clear on next steps.

A question to reflect on

What listening strategy will you take on today?

Mastering the art of listening can transform your leadership.
