Plan for the Unexpected

by Pia Jansson | Nov 13, 2024 | Leadership

Change is inevitable in business and life, yet we often work like we will be around forever.

We pour energy into building expertise, leading teams, and creating strategies.

But what happens when someone is suddenly not there anymore? What if that someone is you?

When a gap appears

The minute a person steps out unexpectedly, they take a layer of wisdom and skills with them, leaving a gap that is not always easily filled.

And often, others are left to pick up the slack.

A familiar situation

We have all been there.

A team loses a key player, and the business scrambles to catch up on lost knowledge and momentum.

Investing in cross training and building a culture of shared wisdom reduces these disruptions.

Yet many do not prioritize it. Why is that?

What resilience really means

One of my biggest lessons over the years is that resilience is not just about having a backup plan on paper.

This is even more important for smaller businesses with limited resources.

Actively investing time in cross training, building skill sets, and creating an environment where knowledge flows freely can mean the difference between success and failure.

This approach does not just prepare you for the unexpected.

It strengthens the team, increases adaptability, and supports long term success.

Your role as a leader

As a leader, it is your responsibility to ensure your organization thrives, even if you are not there to lead it.

A question to reflect on

Would your business continue to run smoothly if you or a key team member did not show up tomorrow?

What gaps would remain, and how can you start filling them now?

Being prepared for the future is a choice.

Let’s make the most of today by creating a lasting legacy.
