The Book I Didn’t Plan

I had a plan: turn my blogs into a leadership book.

Years of observations, lessons from working with leaders, ideas I'd been exploring through my blogs.

The source material was already there. The path felt obvious. But every time I tried to explain an idea, I'd write a few paragraphs, delete them, and start with a story instead. About a person, conversation, or moment that shifted something.

At first I thought the stories were just adding context.

The stories were the foundation.

That's when I saw it. The stories weren't supporting the leadership book; they were its foundation.

Without them, the ideas stayed abstract. With them, they became real.

I realized I wasn't writing one book anymore. I was writing two.

The memoir had been quietly writing itself all along. No plan, no outline, no intention.

Sometimes the work knows first.

I don't think I could have written the leadership book without first understanding the journey that shaped it. And when I finally finished it, it wasn't quite the book I originally imagined.

I'm grateful for that. This version is better than anything I originally planned.

Sometimes the stories we don't plan to tell end up explaining the person we've become.
