When the Questions Stop

by Pia Jansson | Aug 4, 2026 | Leadership

One of the easiest ways to tell that something has shifted in a team isn't what people are saying.

It's what they've stopped saying.

When silence starts to speak

The questions dry up. Ideas come less often. Conversations get shorter and safer, and people start choosing their words more carefully.

You can feel it, even if you can't quite explain why.

As a leader, it's easy to read the quiet as calm. Nothing seems wrong, so you assume everything is fine.

But that's where it gets tricky.

Pay attention to what's missing

Silence can look like agreement, and sometimes it is. But often it's people who've learned that speaking up doesn't go anywhere.

That shift doesn't usually happen overnight. It builds slowly, one unasked question at a time.

And by the time you notice it, the gap between you and your team is already wider than you think.

Maybe that's where it begins.

Paying attention to what's no longer there.

Have you ever noticed that shift?
